The cold water thing, which is counterintuitive
Plenty of people were told to run hot water to help things flush through. It is the wrong advice and it causes the problem it is meant to prevent.
Hot water melts fats and grease. They flow past the disposal happily as liquid, then cool as they travel along the pipe and solidify somewhere further down — coating the pipe wall, where they start catching everything that passes and where you cannot reach them.
Cold water keeps fats solid. The disposal breaks them into small pieces and they are carried out as particles rather than as a coating.
So: cold water, every time, before you switch it on and for a while afterwards.
The 15-20 seconds afterwards matters too. Most people switch off the moment the noise changes, which leaves the ground waste sitting in the trap right where it settles. Those extra seconds are what actually carry it clear of the fixture.
Worth knowing
Fats belong in the bin regardless. A disposal is for incidental scraps rinsed off a plate, not for disposing of cooking fat — and no amount of cold water makes a poured cup of bacon grease acceptable.
What genuinely should not go in
These are the recurring causes rather than the freak accidents.
- Fibrous vegetables — celery, onion skin, corn husk, artichoke, asparagus ends. The disposal does not cut those fibres; it spins them, and they wind around the impeller like rope around a propeller.
- Starchy foods — rice, pasta, oats, potato peel. They keep absorbing water after they have gone down and swell into a paste that fills the pipe.
- Coffee grounds and eggshells. Dense and fine, so they settle and pack like wet sand rather than flowing. A disposal makes the particles smaller, which packs them tighter.
- Bones and fruit stones. They wedge between the plate and the chamber wall.
- Grease and oil in any quantity.
- Anything non-food, which mostly arrives by accident — bottle caps, teaspoons, jar rings.
Routine care
Ice cubes. Run a tray through with cold water occasionally. The ice knocks buildup off the grinding components and the chamber wall. It does not sharpen anything — disposals have no blades, they have blunt impellers that fling waste against a stationary ring — but the cleaning effect is real.
Citrus peel for smell, after the ice. Lemon or orange rind cut small.
Clean under the splash guard. This is the part nobody does, and it is where the smell actually comes from — food debris collects on the underside of those rubber flaps and never gets rinsed. Lift them and scrub with an old toothbrush.
Run it regularly, even if you barely use it. A disposal left idle for weeks develops corrosion on the plate and dries out its seals. A few seconds with cold water once a week keeps it free.
Never bleach or chemical drain cleaner. Both damage the rubber components and the metal, and neither addresses the actual cause of a smell.
Reading a leak
Where it leaks from determines whether it is a repair or the end of the unit.
From the top, where it meets the sink — the sink flange seal has failed. Repairable: the unit comes down, the flange is re-sealed with plumber's putty and re-tightened.
From the side — either the dishwasher inlet connection or the discharge tube to the trap. Usually a gasket or a loose connection, and among the cheapest repairs there is.
From the bottom of the housing — the internal seal between the grinding chamber and the motor has failed, and water is now getting into the motor. This is not repairable in any economic sense. Replace the unit, and do it promptly, because a wet motor is also an electrical hazard.
Dry everything and use a paper towel to identify the source before deciding. Water runs down and pools at the bottom regardless of where it started, so the puddle tells you nothing on its own.
Signs it is near the end
Frequent jamming with nothing obviously wrong going in — worn impellers no longer clearing material.
Running but not grinding — the impellers are worn or broken, or the plate is spinning without engaging.
Resetting the overload button repeatedly. That is the motor straining or failing, and repeated resets are how one gets destroyed. Find the cause instead.
A leak from the bottom of the housing, as above.
Noticeably slower and louder than it used to be.
Most domestic units run 8-12 years. Beyond that, fitting parts is usually spending money on a unit already close to the end — and replacement is a contained job. Troubleshooting a disposal that will not start at all is covered separately in hum versus silence.
